Specificatie directe werkgelegenheid uit luchtverkeer op Schiphol

From 1969 to 2012 Schiphol conducted an annual employment survey of organisations established at the airport. On the basis of these data – some of which has been supplemented with data from other research reports – a more detailed explanation and a breakdown is given below of economic activity and employment in the aviation chain. The companies and organisations in question have been divided into five categories:

The first link in the chain consists of organisations that derive their income directly from air transport and the handling of air traffic, aircraft, passengers, baggage and cargo. Their total annual earnings are € 7.7 billion (a 2013 estimate), with the following five types of organisations contributing their economic activity and employment directly to this figure:

  • 77 airlines: 23,870 employees (of whom 23,071 are employed by one of the 11 Dutch airlines)
  • 19 aircraft handlers and/or aircraft suppliers: 3,172 employees
  • 136 air cargo offices/transhipment and cargo forwarding companies: 2,920 employees1
  • 1 airport operator: 2,447 employees
  • Air traffic control (LVNL): 980 employees
  • Together, these aviation organisations employ 36,398 people (46% of all jobs in Dutch aviation). Of these, 5,148 employees working for airline maintenance divisions (chiefly KLM Engineering & Maintenance) have been accounted for under the aviation industry (Category 5).

The above types of aviation organisations are located primarily at Schiphol. This is not the case with air cargo offices, transhipment and cargo forwarding companies and aircraft suppliers, which are also partly located in neighbouring municipalities.

The second link in the chain is formed by the providers of services to the air transport industry. In 2012, 8,546 people at Schiphol (11% of all jobs in Dutch aviation) were employed by 119 service companies, which can be divided into five types:

  • 7 security firms: 5,012 employees
  • 14 cleaning companies: 1,528 employees
  • 97 providers of services to aviation companies: 1,567 employees
  • 23 recruitment and staffing organisations/employment agencies: 204 employees
  • 9 facility management organisations: 102 employees
  • The providers of services to the aviation industry that are not located at Schiphol have not been included in these figures. Therefore, the actual number of jobs and volume of economic activity in this category are greater and more diverse than shown here.
The third category of companies at the airport covers service providers that derive their income from money spent by (international) passengers at and visitors to the airport. There are 214 of such companies in total, employing 12,805 people (16% of all jobs in Dutch aviation). Provided below is a breakdown of the five major types of service providers:

  • 23 hotels and restaurants: 3,438 employees
  • 32 various providers of services to passengers and/or visitors: 3,796 employeess
  • 38 retail outlets for passengers and/or visitors: 1,853 employees
  • 10 public transport and taxi companies: 1,212 employees
  • 23 banks or financial institutions: 801 employees

Jobs at hotels in the neighbouring municipalities have not been included in these figures.

Various government services at the airport are responsible for screening all incoming and outgoing aircraft, crew members, passengers, baggage and cargo. In 2012, a total of 3,990 screening officers worked at the airport (5% of all jobs in Dutch aviation). They are broken down into five main services at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol below:

  • The Dutch Border Police (Royal Netherlands Marechaussee): 1,832 employees
  • The Dutch Tax and Customs Administration – Schiphol Cargo: 710 employees
  • The Dutch Tax and Customs Administration – Schiphol Passengers: 596 employees
  • The Aviation Police Unit (Luchtvaartpolitie) : 110 employees
  • The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND): 96 employees
  • These government screening services are mainly located at Schiphol, with the exception of the Dutch Tax Administration, which is also partly located in Hoofddorp.
Among the suppliers of the air transport industry are companies that supply technical concepts and systems for air transport and the handling of passengers, baggage and cargo, as well as aircraft maintenance divisions and aircraft maintenance companies. They provide a total of 17,600 jobs (15% of all jobs). In the Netherlands, this group includes:

  • Airline maintenance divisions
  • Suppliers to the aircraft construction industry (systems and components)
  • Companies performing maintenance on aircrafts, components and systems (not affiliated with any airline
  • Companies performing maintenance on aircrafts, components and systems (not affiliated with any airline

Aviation companies located at Schiphol provide jobs to 5,148 people. Outside Schiphol, there are another 12,452 people employed by the aviation industry, a large proportion of whom are based at various Fokker Technologies sites in the Netherlands (Woensdrecht, Helmond, Hoofddorp, Hoogerheide, Hoogeveen and Papendrecht).
