Demanding working conditions

Irregular hours, heavy physical work and the constant pushing up of the retirement age are placing serious and prolonged physical, mental and emotional demands on workers in aviation.

Circumstances specific to aviation in this regard are as follows:

  • 70.9% of employees (ground staff and flight/cabin crew) also work outside of office hours – except for older employees who can request exemption – which causes disruption to their natural day/night rhythm, in particular.
  •  23.8% of employees (flight/cabin crew) struggle with disruption to their day/night rhythm because of time differences when flying to destinations outside of the Netherlands.
  • 47.1% of employees work in physically demanding, operational occupations such as baggage and cargo handling, but there are also those whose jobs entail providing services to passengers while standing or walking.

Without appropriate measures this will lead to a loss in productivity and cause employees to leave their jobs.
