Obstacles to the employability of older ground staff

The aviation sector is struggling with the problem of ageing more than many other sectors. The average age of employees is more than four years higher than the national average. A relatively high percentage of older employees perform physically demanding tasks, especially those working in security, logistics and services. The employability of some employees is more limited than that of others because their fitness levels are no longer adequate for the tasks they are performing

In addition, various collective agreements stipulate that employees over a certain age can be relieved of night shifts on request. This allows them to remain in work for a longer period of time, but it also puts an additional strain on night shifts. Career progression opportunities for this senior target group are limited as they typically have little training and no higher education background.
